If you’re anything like many of the people I work with, you’ve tried every productivity trick in the book.
You’ve downloaded the apps.
You’ve bought the planners, color-coded the calendars, made the timers your best friend.
Maybe you’ve even tried the Pomodoro method, “eat the frog,” or the popular “just be consistent.”
And still… nothing sticks.
Before you assume this is a “you” problem, I want to offer you a different perspective — one that might feel like a breath of fresh air, like when you go for a refreshing hike at Fair Hill Trail:
You’re not the problem. You’re not broken. You’re not lazy. You simply may not be wired the way these systems assume you are wired.
As you take this journey to understanding the way you’re wired, remember to practice self-compassion, and now, let’s dig into why productivity and time management hacks don’t work for you.

You might be neurodivergent (note: This blog is intended to be used for educational purposes, and by no means a diagnosis. See ‘More Blog Articles’ below for helpful resources on psychological testing). Knowing the way you’re wired matters because it will change the way you approach time management and productivity, in a way that works for you and not against. Now, you might be wondering how this could be possible because you were a good student and achieved success. But for many adults, especially women, you fly under the radar due to masking.
According to Psychology Today, masking is defined as “when individuals repress or hide signs of a mental health condition [or neurological difference] to blend in or adapt to the neurotypical world.”
Neurodivergent is a term that describes people whose brains process, learn, and experience the world differently from what society has labeled as “typical” (take “typical” with a grain of salt as everyone has variations and differences). This includes people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, giftedness, or other forms of cognitive diversity.
Within our society, neurodivergent individuals face challenges that overlap with marginalization because societal norms frequently have a hard time accepting different ways of thinking. This causes barriers in work or school settings.
Neurotypical, on the other hand, refers to individuals whose neurological patterns fit more easily into the dominant expectations of how a person should focus, plan, behave, and respond. (Again, take this with a grain of salt, as we’re all humans who are different and unique.)
What it comes down to is understanding where you fall in this landscape because it isn’t about labeling — it’s about understanding the way you’re wired.
And, for our clients, understanding the way they’re wired is both incredibly affirming and liberating.
A Familiar Story: When the Hacks Don’t Hack It
This is something we see often at CCWB for clients struggling with time management and productivity, whether at their professional work place, at home, or running their own business.
To give you a tangible example, I’d like to illustrate it here:
You start a new productivity method on Monday, like setting a timer to help you keep track of your time or a new color-coded system for your calendar. You’re hopeful — this time, maybe it’ll finally help. By Wednesday, the system is already slipping. By Friday, you’ve given up completely and you’re marinating in shame or dismissing the whole experiment with negative self-talk.
You might find yourself thinking:
- “I’m terrible at this.”
- “I just need to try harder.”
- “Why can’t I just stick with something?”
- “Everyone else seems to manage just fine.”
- “Why isn’t this working? Maybe I just need to keep pushing through.”
But the system didn’t fail because you’re inconsistent. It failed because it wasn’t created for the way your brain works.
You’re Not Broken And You Don’t Need to Be Fixed
We live in a world that often frames neurodivergent traits as flaws — distractions to be tamed, emotions to be toned down, creativity to be tucked away until “appropriate.”
But your differences aren’t deficits.
They’re simply differences — and many of them are strengths when understood through the right lens.
Your brain isn’t a malfunctioning version of a “normal” brain. It’s a valid, powerful variation of human wiring.
I’ve mentioned this several times already, but it doesn’t hurt to repeat this: The problem isn’t you.
The problem is the mismatch between your natural rhythms, and the narrow definition of “productivity” that the world tries to impose on you.
The Hidden Strengths You Might Not Even Realize You Have
Many times (including myself!), we dismiss our strengths and superpowers because it just comes so naturally to us. You may have gotten comments from others over the years like, “You’re so creative!” or “You’re amazing at connecting the dots” or “I love your enthusiasm!” Neurodivergent individuals often have extraordinary strengths, such as:
- Hyperfocus: the ability to dive deeply into something that captivates you
- Creativity and nonlinear thinking: seeing connections others miss
- Emotional depth and empathy: feeling things powerfully and intuitively
- Pattern recognition: noticing details and themes others overlook
- High enthusiasm: bursts of energy when something inspires you
These aren’t traits that need to be managed out of you.
Rather, these are the traits that a well-designed time management system should be built around.
For example, instead of thinking, “How can I fit into time management?”
Flip the script and ask, “How can time management support my strengths and needs?”
So Why is Time Management So Difficult For Me?
Before I dive into how understanding your 5 “overexcitabilities” or intensities can help you create a time management system that works the way you’re wired, let’s first talk about what productivity systems look like in work or school environments that are set up for neurotypical people. Traditional productivity systems largely come from neurotypical norms.
They were created by and for people with:
- Consistent attention
- Predictable energy levels
- Stable sensory needs
- Linear motivation
- Low-to-moderate emotional reactivity
But if you’re neurodivergent, your internal system likely doesn’t operate that way.
You may have:
- Pulsing, interest-driven attention
- Intense sensory needs or sensitivities
- Emotional depth that shapes your energy
- Intellectual curiosity that pulls you in many directions
- An imagination that never seems to turn off
Trying to force yourself into a rigid, neurotypical model can feel like trying to fit into a box that wasn’t made for your brilliant fire.
Your Intensities Matter: The 5 Overexcitabilities
Now, let’s get into how understanding your 5 “overexcitabilities” or intensities can help you create a time management system that works the way you’re wired.
Many neurodivergent individuals resonate with the concept of “overexcitabilities,” or intensities, from Dabrowski’s work. These describe areas where you may experience the world with heightened responsiveness.
Here’s a quick overview:
- Psychomotor Intensity
High energy, rapid thinking, constant movement or restlessness. - Sensual Intensity
Heightened awareness of sounds, textures, scents, food, or visual details. - Emotional Intensity
Deep empathy, vivid emotional reactions, strong emotional memory. - Intellectual Intensity
Curiosity, love of analysis, questioning, problem-solving. - Imaginational Intensity
Creativity, visual thinking, daydreaming, a rich inner world.
In the neurotypical setting, your intensities can be labeled as “too much.”
But, in actuality, your intensities are a roadmap — a blueprint for understanding what truly supports you.
In short, productivity hacks don’t work for you because you’re trying to fit yourself into a system that wasn’t designed for your intensities.
These intensities — your wiring, your energy, your sensory world — deserve to be understood, not suppressed.
Your job isn’t to shrink yourself to match a system. It’s to build a system that expands to match YOU. And you don’t have to do it alone. That’s where therapy can help you discover more about your intensities and how to create a time management system that serves you, and doesn’t work against the way you’re wired.
So, imagine someone hands you a pair of shoes and says,
“Don’t worry — these shoes work for everyone. You just have to break them in.”
So you try.
You really try.
But no matter what you do, the shoes pinch your toes, rub your heels, and leave you blistered.
By the end of the day, your feet are screaming. Eventually you start to wonder:
“Why can’t I just make this work? What’s wrong with me?”
But the problem was never you.
The shoes simply weren’t your size.
Now imagine having shoes custom-made for your feet.
They bend where you bend.
They support your arches.
They move with your stride.
Suddenly walking becomes easier, even enjoyable, not because you’ve changed, but because the system was designed around who you are.
That’s what it feels like to build a productivity system that expands to fit your intensities instead of forcing your intensities to shrink.
How Strength-Based Therapy Supports This Shift
Strength-based therapy starts with one core belief:
You already have the tools inside you — we just need to uncover and honor them.
Instead of asking, “How do we fix what’s wrong?” (Nope!)
At Chester County Well-Being, our caring and compassionate clinicians ask, “What do you do beautifully already? How does your brain shine?”
With this approach, time management becomes:
- Personalized
- Compassionate
- Aligned with your true rhythms
- Supportive of your sensory and emotional needs
- Sustainable
We stop trying to build a life that fights against your wiring, and start building one that works with it.
The Takeaway: You Deserve Systems That Fit YOU
So if productivity hacks haven’t worked for you, let this be your permission slip to stop chasing systems that weren’t designed with you in mind.
You’re not failing or just inconsistent.
You’re simply wired differently — beautifully, meaningfully, powerfully.
And when your intensities are understood, honored, and supported, something amazing happens:
You begin to create time management systems that finally feel natural.
Next Blog Post: Designing Systems That Support Your Intensities
In the next post, we’ll explore how understanding your intensities allows you to create supportive, sustainable time management and productivity systems, and I’ll share real-life examples of what this can look like.
You deserve systems that honor your strengths, not ones that shrink them. And we’re here to help you build them.
